In state 2, the ten largest ethnic groups in descending order are:
Yadav
Musalman
Tharu
Teli
Koiri/Kushwaha
Chamar/Harijan/Ram
Dhanuk
Musahar
Kurmi, and
Dusadh/Pasawan/Pasi.
The ethnic majority in state 2 belongs to Yadav. Musalman refers to Muslims. Interestingly, Tharus are divided between State 1, 2, 3, and 5 without a clear majority in either of the proposed states. This may be one reason for their dissent. Several of the ethnic groups in state 2 fall under what was historically termed as “untouchables”. The fact that at least three of the ten largest ethnic groups belong to them means they can exercise this advantage to elect representatives who can hopefully bring about a positive change and upliftment in their social status.
