Raksharam Chamar to receive Darnal Award for Social Justice
The Steering Committee has decided to present ‘Darnal Award for Social Justice’ to Raksharam Harijan Chamar of Banskhor VDC-6, Kapilvastu district.
This year, 28-years-old Raksharam has bagged the prestigious award for social justice for his significant contribution in the field of social justice. The award amount is Rs. 500,000, which will be handed him over at the award ceremony on August 15, 2016.
The recipient of the award has been working as human rights officer and legal assistant for Terai Human Rights Defenders Alliance (THRD Alliance). During his association with THRD Alliance, he helped file the writ petition against the 16-point understanding among major political parties that had led the Supreme Court’s ruling to ensure federal structure in the new constitution. He is also involved with various battles of justice in association with THRD Alliance and Terai Justice Center.
The Darnal Award for Social Justice is named after the founding chairman of Jagaran Media Center late Subash Darnal. Mr. Darnal was only 31 years old when he died tragically in a car accident in Washington DC on 14 August. He was in America for a Stanford University’s Dropper Hills Summer Fellowship. At his young age, he had already achieved far more than most privileged people do in a much longer life.
The Darnal Award for Social Justice is an annual international award that celebrates and honors the short but extraordinary life of Suvash Darnal. Each year, the Award will recognize and support the work of an individual, organization, or a movement that has been steadfastly fighting for social justice, dignity, and a better future for the Dalits and other marginalized people in Nepal and beyond.
